Getting MapTale

MapTale is $4,999 + GST per organisation, a one-off fee: unlimited users, unlimited public viewers, nothing per user, no recurring licence. This includes configuration for your organisation (your boundary shapes and naming, your icons and brand colours, deployment into your report) and is demo-ready within days of receiving your files. An optional maintenance plan keeps the visual current as Power BI evolves and includes priority support.

A note on the one-off fee: Microsoft occasionally changes the requirements for custom visuals like MapTale. Rather than build that risk into an ongoing licence, we keep the fee one-off and, on the rare occasion an update is needed to keep MapTale working, charge for that fix at our standard consulting rate.

Does it work with publish to web?

Yes, that is the point. The demo at the top of this page is exactly that. Public viewers cost nothing, and financials can be hidden in the public version.

Where does our data go?

Nowhere. MapTale runs entirely inside Power BI; your report data never leaves the visual. See privacy below.

What data do we need?

A table of projects with latitude and longitude. Status, budgets, photos, descriptions and dates are optional and light up as you add them.

Can you use your own map tiles for satellite imagery?

Yes.

Is it certified by Microsoft?

No, for the same reason no external-mapping visual is: certification prohibits loading map tiles from the internet. The practical effect is the visual does not render in PDF or PowerPoint exports.

What are the ongoing costs?

The map infrastructure has no usage fees, and the one-off fee never expires or renews. The optional maintenance plan is the only recurring cost. If Microsoft changes what custom visuals require to keep working, any fix needed is billed at our standard consulting rate rather than folded into a subscription.

Email warren.dean@datatale.com.au with the MapTale version from the map’s bottom-right attribution line (for example “MapTale v1.1.0.0”), whether you are in Desktop, the Service or a published report, and a screenshot. We aim to respond within two business days; maintenance-plan customers get priority. Quick fixes: a map that will not load usually means IT needs to allow tiles.openfreemap.org and server.arcgisonline.com; a new version not appearing means close and reopen Power BI Desktop.

Privacy

MapTale runs entirely inside Power BI on the viewer’s device. Report data is never transmitted to DataTale or anyone else; uploaded artwork and boundary files are stored inside your report file; licence keys are verified locally. To draw the map, the visual requests public map tiles and fonts (OpenFreeMap, Esri, and any tile server, photo host or font you configure); those hosts see standard web request information such as an IP address, never your report data.
